Basel Sh’hadeh: The free soul
Yesterday Basel joint a peaceful protest with over two hundred other activists who represented the diverse and rich cultural scene in Syria. Musicians, actors, journalists, scenarists, directors and activist voiced the people’s anger and willingness for freedom, democracy, and human rights. They were beaten, harassed, humiliated and then detained. They were then taken to unknown destination to join tens of thousands of activists.
Basel is a close friend of mine, one of the few real people I have met in my life. I am still impressed by how he can simultaneously play the guitar, harmonica, and sing!. He is a great person, with passion to the small things in life. Basel is a talented musician, inspiring director, a keen adventurer, an outstanding engineer and a dedicated archaeologist. He sacrificed a lot to take care of his sick mother, and young brother. I still remember how shy and humble he was, after winning a musical competition.
Basel is not a salafist, nor an infiltrator. He was there voicing his opinion and speaking out for the poor, helpless and oppressed in his country. His arrest is another barbarian act by the fascist regime of Al-Assad family.
Basel, I will always remember my first guitar lesson with you, my first hick and the joy, honesty and love you bring to everyone around you. You have always been free and you will always be.
Freedom to Basel and to all the Syrian detainees.
